Volunteer Application Instructions

  1. Submit an online application. 
  2. Volunteers under the age of 18 should complete and submit the parental permission form.
  3. Complete a screening interview. 
  4. Complete a MN Department of Human Services background study and fingerprinting.
  5. Attend new volunteer skills lab and get medical clearance by Employee Occupational Health Services (EOHS).

1. How long does the volunteer application process typically take?

The application and screening process typically takes three to four weeks. Students who wish to begin volunteering in early June should apply in April. The minimum age to volunteer is 14.

2. What is volunteer training?

Volunteer training is a three step process: 

  1. Self-paced online orientation 
  2. On-site skills lab. Skills lab is scheduled monthly
  3. Specific department training from staff or experienced volunteers
3. Are there costs involved?

Students under 18 must bring immunization records to their health clearance appointment. Contact Volunteer Services for more information on medical clearance requirements. Adults needing varicella (chicken pox) vaccine, as determined by EOHS, complete this requirement through their own health care provider or community clinic. Fees may apply. Volunteers may purchase their own uniform ($30-40)

4. Do I need medical experience or training?
No, all the training you will need is provided. Participation in periodic department meeting and completion of annual required learning are needed to maintain active status.

5. What volunteer positions are available?

6. Do I have to volunteer a minimum of hours? 

A typical volunteer works four hours weekly. Every-other week options are available. Typical shifts are 8:00 a.m. – noon, 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. or 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. The minimum service requirement is 100 hours.

9. When is the application deadline?

We accept applications on a continuous basis. The only exception to this is for students who are seniors in high school. High school seniors must apply and complete the skills lab by October of their senior year. No applications for seniors will be accepted after that point.
