Seniors with mental illness need a treatment program that addresses their specific needs. Across the Fairview system, we offer two programs to support seniors:

  • Senior Treatment Program at the University of Minnesota Medical Center
  • Geriatric Mental Health Unit at St. Joseph’s Hospital

Senior Treatment Program

Established in 1976, our program was the first of its kind in the Twin Cities and one of the first in the nation. Respect for the unique aspects of aging is an integral part of our treatment plan, which focuses on the specific needs of older adults with complex mental health problems.

Specialized senior care

Our team works to engage each patient in personalized therapy that is designed to relieve symptoms and help develop necessary coping skills.

Our care plans consist of a combination of medication, group therapy, and individual therapy. In addition, we work to strengthen each patient’s family support system and connect each individual to available resources in the community. Our goal is to create a network that will help patients be successful after discharge.

Exceptional care team

Our staff has a special interest in geriatric psychiatry and an enthusiasm for working with seniors and their families.  The staff includes:
  • Chaplains
  • Clinical social workers
  • Consulting physicians
  • Dietitians
  • Nurses
  • Occupational/recreational therapists
  • Psychiatrists
  • Psychologists

Family support

We provide family education and support on such issues as the aging process, specific diseases, guilt, grief, and loss.

Geriatric Mental Health Unit

At St. Joseph’s Hospital, we offer a 12-bed separate care unit to help older adults with depression, anxiety, and a number of other illnesses.

Our private rooms are designed with large windows, calming colors, and special lights to promote a quiet and restful space.
